bigband

This song idea seemed nice for a bigband recording. Now that’s easily said but not that easily done. Most keyboards and also drumparts these days are recorded – and edited – through MIDI which is great if you wanna get the music as tight as no human can ever play.

When it has to sound bit more loose MIDI is still a great recording tool but you shouldn’t be quantisizing that much. Also with a bigband sound it’s difficult to find proper brash and horns in your library of synthesizer presets – when you don’t have couple of $100s to spend on top-class sampled sounds. So it starts sounding “cheap” very quick.

Anyway, I wanted to give it a try and here’s the result. Just picture some 15-piece
bigband playing a small nightclub and it will do as a song demo – I hope…

I Am Still Your Friend

I Am Still Your Friend – Bertram & Hoeve – Recording by Moonpub Music, the Netherlands – let me know

First song with Ray Bertram (US). Ray is co-founder of the Back Country Connection, a group of songwriters plugging themselves online – and as I have been told more things to come up as they go along.

Song felt right for a mainstream country recording. As someone with his roots in pop and in Europe I still have to discover what all that country is about but I think I’ve gone one step closer with this one.

You decide though…

Song also is discussed at songwriter101 forum.

And what’s more: has a video…

Down In The Jungle

Down In The Jungle – Matthews & Hoeve – Recording by Moonpub Music – let me know

I used this recording to test new DAW (Digital Audio System) Cubase 5. It will take months to really know what the software can do but it’s great fun. Yes, I used some pitch correction also.

It’s a bit of a strange tune, and maybe one day I might decide redoing it. Actually I wanted a soft sound and mysterious atmosphere. But somehow it developed into a 5 minute rock tune. What happened? Can’t tell – was too busy recording…

I still have to ask Shirley – who came with lyric – what exactly she means with lyric. But perhaps item at her songwriter101 forum will explain…

Song by Matthews & Hoeve

STYLE: Rock, some Latin

Wake up honey
I got these twinkels in my eyes
I’m gonna hold on real tight
Wave bye bye
I’m going where sunsets tames
these feelings inside

Feel the rebel baby
This is the freedom we need
Let’s get naked you and me

Down in the Jungle
Where my spirit can run free
Down in the Jungle
Come take this ride with me

Breath Breath Breath…
Breath Breath Breath…

Down in the Jungle
Where my spirit can run free
Down in the Jungle
Come take this ride with me

Sometimes I question
While I’m busy counting stars
Will we ever touch the skies?
Sometimes I question
Where the perfect lovers are
Can we ever reach that high?
