Symphonetta Nbr. 17
Posted by Johnny in Classical, Instrumental on February 24th, 2008
For some time I’ve been thinking of doing acoustic guitar pieces. Not for the sake of the fingerpicking technique but more to find out about the composing. There is still a long way to go though – but hey, you have to do a first one to make it a start. Here it is, that first one.
I will do the full “orchestral” version another time. This take of only the acoustic guitar seemed okay to put online also.

Two symphonetta’s in one week? You’ve been working hard… Well, their recordings were both nearly finished. Today was spend completing them both. That’s 5 of them now done and number 15 planned. Which means that 10 are still waiting. No, I am not numbering them randomly…

Symphonetta Nbr. 14

It’s always nice doing a symphonetta. They are mostly just for my own entertainment. I have no plans with them but to enjoy the recordings. And maybe one day it will give that great melody, who knows…

Miles Away
Posted by Johnny in Instrumental on October 28th, 2007
It’s another test recording. Got some new music software and had to find out how to use it for new recordings. Sounds like something Miles Davis could have done, so that’s why the songtitle….
If interested – the test was: I ran an instrumental MIDI file through Cubase and transposed all melody tracks to another key. This gave me a completely different tune but still with the same rhytm. I then used the midi-guitar for a new melody over these transposed tracks.
It was of course a lot of editing and playing parts myself to fit the new concept, but Miles Away came out as the result of all this. When searching for a sound to play the main melody – done by the guitar – I hit upon a Miles Davis sort of sound. That gave me the title for this funky instrumental.
You tell me if this is stealing, sampling or just being creative. To me the tune felt original enough to use as a Moonpub Music demo.
For those REALLY interested: the tune edited was Spyro Gyra’s Grass Hopper. Click here to hear/download MIDI.
